Digital Photography Tip: Look for Rhythm

by Bob99miller
(Atlanta, GA)

Whale's rib cage?

Whale's rib cage?

I really found two things to drive this picture: First, is the strong rhythm of repeating elements. Second, is the diagonal motion.

There are really patterns within patterns. On the far right, the rhythm consists of parallel lines. As you move to the left, three groups of 8 to 10 of the parallel lines move out to the spine, while the lines between these groups wrap behind the spine. Then, in the spine itself, are the repeated patterns of lit rectangles.

The lights at the bottom right bother me a bit, but I didn't want to lose the lowest parts of pattern by aiming above the lights. I think it was worth the trade-off.

Good start, but...

Really cool subject. I'd like to know what building (I think it's a building) this is.

The patterns work well. I like the diagonal orientation and yes, it does look a bit like a rib cage. But I wonder if you couldn't have moved slightly to minimize the impact of the lights, or maybe underexposed a bit more.
