With time to kill between an afternoon business meeting and a flight home, I chose to wander the beach. These two young women were laughing and frolicking in the surf as I was trying to find a good sunset photo composition - thinking I might be able to do something with the small boats on the horizon. When I spotted these women, about 45 minutes before true sunset, I had to walk fast to keep them between me and the sun. This was challenging, as I was trying to be unobtrusive while dodging people on the beach, snapping pictures, and chimping.

The final image above has good contrast and warmth. The sun's reflection, which has the potential to dominate the image, is subdued by the intervening women. It was chance that put the left woman in complete silhouette while the one on right is lit up and enveloped by the sun, making her legs seem almost transparent. |

Exposure was a problem with this image. Here is the original:
I was using spot metering, and when focusing on the women's shadow side, the camera overexposed, as would be expected. In fact, it gave me the same settings as for the seagull photo taken earlier the same day with compeltely differerent light conditions. |
As there was still plenty of dynamic range in the image, I was able to make several edits to improve this sunset photo:
