Just as with last week's sunset photo, I find that it is good to have my camera at hand for idle times. Along those lines, my wife and I have reached an easy peace about my photography when we travel. She makes sure to have a good book for when I stop to take pictures. Then, when she goes antiquing, I can take more pictures. Sounds like a win-win for both of us!

In this case, I was at an antique shop, sitting in the car and scanning for good photo opportunities. Right outside my window was this bright white wicker bench with a colorful wagon behind.

Strengths

Two compositional elements add interest to this image.

  1. The contrast between the white bench and primary colors of the wagon.

  2. Strong intersecting lines of the bench, wagon wheel, and wagon stakes.

Keys to improvement

Do you wonder how tall the green wagon is? By cropping below the top edge, I've kept your eye from wandering away from what is essentially an abstract photography composition.

Had I shown the top edge with space above, you would see this more as a photo of a wagon with a wicker bench in front than as the abstract is supposed to be

In truth, there was a bit more serendipity in arriving at this arrangement - I originally cropped the image this way to hide a car window and other junk above the wagon. Sometimes good things happen for odd reasons!
