Photography Composition: Drink

Digital Photo Composition #10 - 10 June 2009
Nikon D300, Nikkor 70 - 200 mm VR @ 116 mm, ISO 200, 1/6400s, f/2.8.
Bright midday light drove home the boldness of this blue drinking fountain
against the green lawn.

I reviewed the previous nine compositions in this weekly series and saw that the only bright colors were reds and oranges. I needed to shake things up and insert a bit of blue.

A friend and I were shooting, just strolling along the river and came across a canoe livery and public park featuring this drinking fountain - I have no idea who had the foresight to place such a unique fountain in our path, but my lens was grateful for this blue opportunity.

The Critical EyePhoto Critique

Strengths

While photo writers often tout the virtues of the golden light of dawn and sunset, there is ample opportunity to take advantage of midday sun. The bold colors in this composition make that point brilliantly - pun intended.

With an f/2.8 aperture, the push-button is in sharp focus, and the spout is in reasonably sharp focus. With the resultant shallow depth of field the support column takes on a nice blur and the grass blends into a carpet that hides all of its bare spots.

Keys to improvement I'd like to have taken better advantage of the bokeh of this lens to smooth the grass even further. I could have done that by getting further from the fountain and using the longer end of the lens' zoom range.
