You Can Improve Your Digital Photography!

Do these statements describe you?

  • You're having a terrific time with digital photography and your new digital camera, but you want to put more magic and drama into your images!
Chicken photo: Digital photography image with poor contrast and color Chicken photo: Digital photography image with strong contrast and color
You'd like to go from grayness... ...to punchy clarity.

  • You are looking for a fresh perspective on this exciting and challenging hobby - a way to look at your pictures and photography technique differently.
Photo composition loses subject Photo composition highlights subject
Instead of obscured subjects... ...you want to bring out their character.

If this is you, then you have come to the right place.

ImproveYourDP has been created for people who are looking for ways to make their pictures more interesting for their friends and the world to view. And, equally important, ImproveYourDP readers look at other photographers' pictures for clues on how to make their own better.

You can improve your approach to taking pictures. Think of this website as your digital photography guide, designed to help you discover different ways to look at photographs and approach your picture taking.

Cornerstones for improvement

ImproveYourDP begins with a framework for learning more about digital photography. There are three elements:

  • A critical eye
  • Photographic knowledge
  • Camera technique

Critical Eye

This is the ability to see what is interesting in a subject before taking the photograph - certainly a key part of improving your photography.

But, you also need a strong critical eye to help you evaluate your pictures after you have taken them. Then, you can evaluate how the result differs from your intent. This helps you understand what you are doing right and what you can improve.

As you improve your ability to analyze your own photographs, you improve your ability to learn from those of other photographers.

Photographic Knowledge - CSE

Cameras use light to create, or paint, an image. You can think of this process in terms of the CSE of photography (Composition, Sharpness, and Exposure), essentially the basic principles of photography. Your critical eye helps you evaluate how well you have balanced CSE for a photograph.

Camera Technique

Once you know how to look at your subject and evaluate the pictures that you take, and then understand the photographic process, you will want to think about how to best operate your camera to get great pictures.

Basic photography tips in this guide apply to all camera types. More advanced digital photography techniques will leverage the capabilities of more sophisticated (and more expensive) cameras. You'll find that ImproveYourDP organizes the information in easy layers, starting with the essentials, then adding more advanced perspective as you move further down the page.

What does it take to improve your digital photography?

If you are here, you probably have all that you need to begin:

  • A digital camera. You can take great digital camera photos with just about any camera on the market today. You'll find guidance that applies equally well to cameras ranging from point-and-shoot (even cell phone cameras), to prosumer (advanced point-and-shoot), to SLR.

  • A computer and software, for viewing and editing your images.

  • An inquiring mind and a bit of persistence. We all get a few great photos by accident. But if you are here, it is because you want to improve your odds - you want a better percentage of exciting photographs.

Are you ready?

You will improve your digital photography results if you take the time to:
  • Learn how to look at your subject and your photographs.
  • Learn what makes photographs great.
  • Improve you knowledge of what your camera can do for you.

Sound hard? Not really - just work on one thing at a time. Begin by exploring the topics below.
